Unlocking OpenStack’s Potential With Monitoring

By Evan Mouzakitis, Research Engineer, Datadog

If you’re taking full advantage of all of OpenStack’s features, you’ve witnessed first-hand the wealth of operational data a deployment can generate. From notifications and events to metrics and counters, OpenStack offers a lot of insight into its operations—if you know where to look.

Datadog has integrations for a number of OpenStack components, allowing you to graph and alert on metrics from both OpenStack and the rest of your systems. Once integrated, you’ll be able to track VM resource usage over time, alongside host-level metrics, in a customizable out-of-the-box dashboard like the one above. And with dynamically-added tags, you can filter by tenant, machine, VM, or any other dimension you want.

But with so much data available, determining the metrics that matter to your business can be its own challenge. We’ve done some of the legwork for you and have written a guide on collecting the key performance metrics from the number one most-used OpenStack component, Nova.

We’ve broken down the slew of metrics reported by Nova and walk you through how to collect them natively, as well as how to collect them with Datadog.

We look forward to discussing OpenStack monitoring strategies when we meet at OpenStack Silicon Valley in Mountain View next month. See you there!
